MLC Nicholas Centre Opening
The ‘Nicholas Learning Centre’ at Methodist Ladies College (MLC) Kew Campus, was officially opened by Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and Mr Anthony Howard AM QC on 1st November 2019. The new facility, designed by architects McIldowie Partners, incorporates a rooftop garden and renewed Principal’s Terrace. The Principal’s Terrace which had challenging levels, has been transformed into a versatile and spacious lawn framed by a series of gardens. The project integrates accessible pathways into an informal amphitheatre with seating, generous steps and a water rill. A flexible bluestone plaza allows for spill-out and outdoor learning opportunities adjacent to the Nicholas Learning Centre. The Principal’s Terrace incorporates existing significant trees and evokes the original decorative garden in the new plantings that provide a outlook of seasonal change through leaf colour, blossoms and bird life. On level four of the Nicholas Learning Centre a generous rooftop terrace with views to the CBD provides an immersive garden experience for students and teachers. This rooftop stimulates outdoor learning through open flexible spaces and the provision of varied seating options. Adding to the sustainability of the facility, the rooftop provides thermal mass to help insulate the building, while the mainly native garden increases local biodiversity.
