Catherine’s exhibition, The Galaxy Within, is a response to a brief to honour Simon Brown, a long–time staff member, mentor, and friend of TCL who sadly died of a terminal illness in early 2022. The 2023/24 grant recognises Simon’s significant contribution to landscape architecture and urban design—in particular, his seminal involvement in TCL's projects at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.
Catherine created a textile work entitled Traces of Simon, inspired by a labyrinth artwork Simon painted on his and his wife Bec Francis’s bedroom door, and three jewellery pieces, quadrangular neckpeace, quadrangular earrings, and quadrangular brooch, informed by her discussions with scientists Michelle Waycott and Ed Biffin at the SA Herbarium. The exquisitely crafted jewellery has been gifted to Bec Francis and Simon and Bec’s daughter Mackenzie.
On the night, Bec Francis spoke poetically about Simon and Catherine’s work. ‘What has been (even more) incredible is seeing someone get to know Simon from the legacy of what he loved—his work, his art, his family, his story told by us—his passions for art, science, and WONDER.’
