About

TCL with Andrew Burges Architects and Grimshaw worked in collaboration to realise this landmark new facility which envelopes the sporting facilities in landscape. The concept design was chosen from more than 140 other entries in an anonymous design competition run by the City of Sydney.

Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreational Centre has a distinctive topographic form, with a series of planted hills covering the base of the pool building and appearing to hold its roof structure. The facility, which invites all members of the community through a diverse range of recreational offerings, includes four pools, a sports field, meeting rooms, and a cafe. It has become a vibrant hub of activity.

Informal spectator seating around the lowered playing field nestles into the park's sculpted landscape, which features plantings iconic to the Sydney region. The park’s important water strategy involves capturing rainwater from the building's roof and storing it in underground tanks to irrigate the recreation fields and landscape elements.

“Our architects and designers were inspired by Sydney’s much-loved ocean pools, setting the large lap pool within larger recreation spaces reminiscent of hanging out at or wading into the beach. The jewel of the complex is the 50m outdoor lap pool. Its unusual shape inspired by Sydney’s coastline edge allows swimmers to walk and paddle in or sit for a breather on the shoreline." - Lord Mayor Clover Moore
