About

MITS operates as a transition school and boarding program for Aboriginal students from Arnhem Land, Tiwi Islands, Victoria Daly Region, the Roper Gulf Region, and Victoria to gain educational opportunities in Naarm/Melbourne.

The bold new MITS results from integrated design collaboration that imbues First Nations principles and reinforces the multifaceted nature of the facility’s functions.

The landscape approach reinforces a Wominjeka/Welcome - inviting people onto Wurrundjeri Woi Wurrung Country through colour, texture, form, planting design, and materiality. The landscape fosters a deep connection to Country and story-telling through contemporary expressions of a living culture.

The design of varied spaces with active edges, includes important elements such as a fire pit and yarning circle, and is imbued with a flexibility that accommodates varied events organised by staff and students, as well as everyday use either in small groups, or by individuals seeking respite.

Experienced and meaningful collaboration with Indigenous stakeholders, including Wurundjeri elders, MITS staff, students, and the broader community throughout all stages of the project, fosters an inclusive and participatory design process that prioritises community empowerment and self-determination, and galvanises the people who inhabit the building, creating a connected, vibrant, and sustainable community.
