About

In 2016 TCL were engaged together with McIldowie Partners to deliver the new Nicholas Learning Centre and adjacent spaces, including the redesign of the Principal’s Terrace and Rooftop Garden in the heart of Methodist Ladies College (MLC) Senior School campus, Kew.

The Principal’s Terrace addressed the very challenging grades of the existing school grounds and access around the site, facilitating connections across the campus, and the rehabilitation of limited use stepped garden landscape into a space for learning and recreation for the Junior-Middle School students. The result was a transformed space offering ramped access through an expansive lawn, framed by seasonally expressive gardens, with ample seating.

Additional shade trees were added to the existing trees in the terrace and a narrow water feature along the garden edge provides a sparkle of light, sound and cooling amenity.

The rooftop was an opportunity to provide additional green space, outdoor learning, social and functional areas with expansive views of Melbourne’s city skyline. Edged by timber seating, circular decking and paved areas provide ample spaces to sit and socialise. Colourful movable furniture allows the students to flexibly arrange the space for outdoor learning, lunchtime conversation or quiet study.
