Breakout Creek Stage 3 successfully demonstrates the ecological, visual and recreational benefits of well functioning Blue/Green Infrastructure. Increased biodiversity of terrestrial landscapes, aquatic ecologies, wildlife habitats, and the enhancement of water quality, have vastly strengthened public community amenity. The historical levee banks were retained and remodeled for improved flood management while facilitating ongoing use of a portion of the site for horse agistment.
Extensive consultation and engagement with key land and water management stakeholders, and thorough community engagement, played a crucial role in shaping the final concept design.
The project includes over 6.2km of walking trails and shared paths, 11,400sqm of permanently vegetated wetlands, five viewing decks, new river crossing and accessible boardwalk.
Engagement with Kaurna representatives (KYAC) from the outset– during the concept phase, through multiple check-in points during the design and construction phases ensured appropriate cultural protocols were maintained and Kaurna narratives embedded across the site.
Integration of multiple interpretive artworks by artist Allan Sumner enliven the recreational river system and act as a reminder that the site has a long history of use, management and cultural significance for Kaurna Meyunna.
