Henley Square Redevelopment

This well-loved coastal suburb has special qualities through the crossings and interaction of people and spaces, emotions and experiences.

The Henley Square Redevelopment forms a ‘littoral zone,’ where cultural space meets the expansive natural qualities of the Gulf; a revitalised square where public space remains for the people.

The overall design intent of the TCL-Troppo entry promotes engagement with the foreshore and defines the Square proper, reinforcing the much-loved village character of Henley. Shade and protection are crucial elements in a seaside location and this has been carefully considered. Avoidance of an isolated Henley Square is a key factor, and shared road traffic calming devices will allow the pedestrian network to easily filter in and out.

This is Henley, a Seaside Village on the gulf, backed by a big lawn, a playful plaza, a large ripple lounge which provides a connection to the jetty and generous terracing to access the beach. Design here is measured in how it can further contribute to the celebration of beach life.

Whimsical showers are both fun and practical for an after-swim rinse. A new permeable plaza will become the true meeting place where locals and visitors meet, dine and are entertained amongst curious playful flotsam and jetsam objects.

The TCL-Troppo design represents a choreography of people and place. It responds to the shifting shapes and moods of Henley Square. It acknowledges the past, embraces the present and provides flexibility to anticipate future possibilities.
